General description

This network consists of a small number of plots, currently 54 in Spain, located in the most representative forest ecosystems. Within the network there are two types of plots:

  • “Basic plots” (41): They are marked forest areas visited annually during the summer to evaluate the woodland health state.
  • “Intensive Monitoring Plots” (13): These plots also have different measurement devices installed on the field. They are visited fortnightly.

Geographical information

LOCATION:
Plots distributed everywhere in Spain on public lands.

EXTENSION: The network is composed by 54 plots of 50 x 50 m surrounded by at least 10 meters wide as buffer area.

Current research topics

It is being carried out accurate measurements to describe the woodland and its history, the vegetation, soil, climate and the rainfall chemical composition.

Research projects and funding institutions

The Intensive Monitoring of European Forest Ecosystems (Level II) is developed in the framework of the UNECE Programme ICP-Forests. The work is partially funded by the EU Member countries by means of the EC Forest Focus. The rest of the funding is provided by the National Focus Centres of the countries that participate in the Programme. In the case of Spain it is the SPAN-DGB.

On-going collaborations

Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrarias (INIA), Fundación CEAM (Valencia) and Cátedra de Botánica de la Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Forestal (Madrid).
